Employers can ban Muslim headscarves, top European court says
Employers can ban Muslim headscarves, top European court saysEmployers can ban Muslim headscarves, top European court saysOn Tuesday, a 15-judge panel of the European Court of Justice ruled that private employers are allowedto ban their employees from wearing visible religious symbols, includingMuslim headscarves like the hijab or khimar. In its ruling, the EU court said that banning a Muslim headscarf didnt constitute direct discrimination based on religion or belief if the company had an internal rule banning any political, philosophical or religious sign.In other words a European company can ban women from wearing headscarves for religious reasons - if it also bans, say, necklaces that depict the Christian cross. No official policy on religious symbols, no banThe important point If a company doesntalready have an internal policy on religious symbols, it cannotforce its employees to take off their headscarves. The issue of headscarvescame under ECJ jurisdiction after top courts in Fr ance and Belgium asked for advice on how to handle the cases of two Muslim women seeking to wear headscarves at work.In Belgium, receptionist Samira Achbita was fired after more than three years at G4S when she wore a headscarf to work. G4S had an official policy that required neutral dress when an employer had a role dealing with customers. The ECJ ruled that G4s was within its rights to dismissAchbita because it had an official image neutrality policy in place before it made its decision to fire her.In France, design engineer Asma Bougnaoui, was fired by her firm Micropole SA after a customer complained that his staff had been embarrassed byher headscarf. Here, ECJ ruled that an employee cannot be fired because ofa customer complaint. In short, if the ban is part of a consistent internal policy and not just a one-off result of one complaint, its now allowed.Belgium does not have federal rules banningreligious symbols at work. Meanwhile, France already bans workers from wearing anyre ligious symbol in public sectorjobs under the countrys rule of lacit, or secularism, although it is rarely enforced. The ruling immediately alarmed anti-discrimination groups. The European Network Against Racism saidthe landmark ruling was dangerous over its definition of who or what gets to be considered neutral.SpokeswomanJilly Pascoet told BuzzFeed News, We believe neutrality is in the tafelgeschirr you are giving and the way you doing your job, and not because of your appearance.Workers can still wear religious symbols in the U.S.The U.S. currently bans workplace religious discrimination.Under the 1964 Civil Rights Act, U.S. employers cannot fire or refuse to hire, or discipline a personbecause of religious practices like wearing a hijab, unless the employer can show that it offered a reasonable accommodation. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission also notes that employers cannot show disparate treatment or retaliate against any employee who wears religious garb or complains about religious discrimination in the workplace.Theres no guarantee, however, that those laws or rules will remain in place as is the case with all legislation, those rules can be changed by Congress and the White House.

Finding and Keeping Best-Fit Retail Jobs
Finding and Keeping Best-Fit Retail JobsFinding and Keeping Best-Fit Retail JobsAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of June 2019, there were 5.8 million people employed in the U.S. retail sector. Many of them were looking to create a rewarding retail career path that included one or several best-fit retail jobs. Those looking to make a career in retail must be customer-focused and derive satisfaction from helping others acquire things they need or want. If that doesnt sound like you, you should probably consider a different career choice. If it does sound like you, you should focus on finding and growing in a series of retail jobs that fit your individual interests, values, and life outlook. In the short term, it might seem more important to select a job based mostly on compensation or on which store is offering the biggest employee discount- and that discount is a nice perk of retail jobs. But over the long haul, many workers are chronically dissatisfied until they land a job that provides them with personal fulfillment- one that is the best fit for them. Evaluating Yourself and Potential Employers The first step in finding a best-fit job is to think about what motivates you, makes you happy, and holds your interest. Think about your values and goals in life. Then start matching the priorities youve established with those of retailers that have a presence where you live. One distributions-mix to identify retailers that offer good entry-level jobs and opportunities to advance and that stay true to their stated company values and purposes is the list of the 20 Best Workplaces in Retail compiled by Fortune and Great Place to Work. The 2018 iteration of this annual list is based on anonymous surveys of over 631,000 U.S. retail employees. Each survey consisted of more than 60 questions aimed at quantifying employees experiences of trust and reaching their full tauglichkeit as part of their company, regardless of job title. Great Place to Work also considered employees opinions on company innovation and the effectiveness of their leaders. Another way to identify potential employers is by reading retailers websites to see what they say about the businesses ethics and goals. Sometimes, of course, these statements are only feel-good words that dont reflect the day-to-day reality of employment at the company. But theyre a decent starting point to determine whether, at the very least, an organizations stated priorities align with yours. Landing the Job Once youve settled on a few potential employers, look on the jobs page of the companies website or ask in person to find out whether theyre hiring. Its often helpful to have had previous retail experience when applying for a retail job, but businesses know everyone has to start somewhere. Your ability to demonstrate enthusiasm for the job and the references of trusted people who can vouch for your potential in the retail sector can make up for a lack of experience. Write a great cover letter and resume that are directed at the specific job youre applying for. Learn as much as you can about the company so you will be well prepared for your interview and you will have intelligent questions to ask. You should also practice answering the most commonly asked interview questions for retail jobs. During interviews with an HR representative and the hiring manager- or perhaps only with the owner of the store, if its a small business- conduct yourself professionally but show your eagerness for the job. Play up any experience you have exceeding customer expectations and make it clear your No. 1 goal is to help patrons. Before accepting a job offer, consider whether the position is truly the best fit for you. Think about the priorities you set at the beginning of the job search process and honestly evaluate whether the job and the employer jibe with them. If they do, take the job. If not- and you are able to hold out for something better- turn it down. Keeping the J ob Once youve gotten your best-fit retail job, the winning-est strategy for holding on to it is to do your best work every day. If the organization is truly interested in promoting the hardest and most capable workers, your contributions will be noticed and you will be rewarded. If you go above and beyond what your job description requires, the company will want to retain you and offer you even greater challenges. Your employment will be as secure as you can possibly make it in the ever-changing retail world. Creating Your Retail Career Path Regardless of how well you perform, your career is unlikely to go straight up one companys ladder. If you feel stuck or are finding it hard to be motivated in your current job, its probably time to look elsewhere. Go back to your list of priorities and research opportunities for your next best-fit retail job- one that will keep you on your best-fit retail career path.

5 Recommendations for Employee Satisfaction Surveys
5 Recommendations for Employee Satisfaction Surveys5 Recommendations for Employee Satisfaction SurveysEmployee satisfaction surveys and facilitated focus groups help the employer identify areas of employee satisfaction and dissatisfaction. For accurate, reliable results, employee satisfaction surveys or focus group questions need to be developed by professionals who understand how to put questions together that obtain unbiased informationadministered appropriately with care and consideration for the organizations culture and communication andanalyzed by people who understand survey research and can provide effective analysis. Further, in the interest of building a relationship of honesty, integrity, and trust, among organization employees, the results should be communicated effectively and acted upon by the organization. Finally, the organizations managers need to track progress and communicate implementation successes and failures. This article does not attempt to provide a comprehe nsive guide to performing employee satisfaction surveys and leading employee focus groups. It does pinpoint five practices to embrace when conducting employee surveys and focus groups. While Employee Responses Are Confidential, the Data Gathered Will be Used to Improve the Workplace I have mixed emotions about confidential or secret surveys. On the one hand, I want the employees comfortable responding truthfully. On the other, the reason employers do employee satisfaction, or customer satisfaction surveys is to telegraph their openness to employee input. The second is to understand what is on their employees minds genuinely. While I recognize that some employers have differing motivations, companies that are employee-oriented, are unlikely to use the information gathered negatively. If you start with an open process, employees will learn that their employer can be trusted to use the information in their best interests. As an external consultant, I always explain to employees tha t my purpose in talking with them is to share information for the common good. Consequently, my promise about confidentiality is that I will use the information to assist the company to make positive progress. The Questions Asked Really Do Matter No one is as familiar with your company culture as the people who work in the company every day. A small group of employees should determine the topics of the questions to ask. These questions will relate to the perceived likes, dislikes, and challenges your employees might experience in your organization. Once youve determined the topics of the questions to ask, develop questions. Your questions should be evaluated to make sure they are not leading to a desired response, vague, or open to interpretation, depending on the employee reading the question. Leading questions or statements are a problem when unqualified individuals develop the survey questions. An example of a leading statement that will also receive a biased answer is My man agers door is always open to me. An example of an unclear statement is My career development and job satisfaction are improved by the performance development planning (PDP) process. Some professional survey firms have developed databases of questions that have been determined to be effective through years of employee or customer satisfaction surveys in different organizations. You might tap into this service even if you dont want to employ an external company to administer your survey or lead your focus groups. Hold Employee Focus Groups or Survey Processes at Your Work Site If you take employee groups offsite to participate in surveys and focus groups, you are sending a clear message that it is not safe to talk about employee satisfaction in the company. It is exactly the opposite of the message that you really want to send. Your message? It is safe to share what you think. The company cares about what you think, and the employer is providing the space and privacy necessary for your participation. Never Lose Control of Your Data While you dont want to know that Mary made that observation, you do want to know that three versus thirty employees made the observation. If you work with a consultant to administeran employee satisfactionsurvey or run employee focus groups, make sure you will have access to the data. This access to the data and analysis will allow you to assess the degree to which various opinions permeate your workforce. The data will allow you to make your own assessment of employee satisfaction. Particularly correlation analysis and other data charts and graphs are important for you to access. I welches once asked to analyze the data from an employee diversity survey that superficially appeared to indicate that theHuman Resources departmentsurveyed had serious diversity appreciation issues. With statisticalanalysis, not my specialty, I hired a statistician to professionally analyze the data for me, and we found the opposite. No statistical proof of a lack of diversity appreciation existed upon data analysis. So, maintain access to the data and the analysis. Never Allow Employees to Self-Select for Participation in Surveys and Focus Groups Employees should never self-select to participate in an employee focus group or survey. When you allow self-selection, youll generally find that less satisfied or very satisfied employees sign up for the group. Or, your more communicative employees are more comfortable expressing their opinions in a group. Your less communicative staff is guaranteed to be unrepresented. In a recent debrief of a clients employee focus group process, severalof the more negative findingswere stated in the exact words a disgruntled employee had used to express the exact sentiments to me the week before. How many employees actually feel that way? Well never know for sure. Access to the resultant data and the selection process for participation in the focus groups was controlled by the external consul tants. For valid and reliable results, either every employee should be included in the survey process, or a random selection method should be employed to decide who to include. To ensure widespread participation, perhaps offer an incentive, either company-wide or for individuals. Conclusions About Employee Satisfaction Surveys You can use a simple paper and pencil instrument, an verbunden survey, or a much more sophisticated process to assess your employees satisfaction. Ive used everything from a data analysis by the internal IT department of an online, internally produced survey to an outside survey consulting firm with tried and true questions. Some fundamentals for successful, trustworthy employee satisfaction surveys and focus groups exist in each instance. I have reviewed five important factors here. Ignore them, and you may obtain a false understanding of your employees satisfaction. Your results may skew positively or negatively based on the skills of your facilitators o r survey producers and the employees who decided to participate. Worst, you may have sent the wrong message to your employees about the safety and worth of communication in your company. Do this at your peril.
